"Cherries and Ultra-Running...An Interesting Combination...!"

*Fact: Did you know cherries are grown and can be picked by the pound
in Leona Valley during the summer?

*
...and in the spring, an annual trail run
is held called...

The Leona Divide 50/50 *

...it looks like a really fun trail run
and an ambitious first attempt at a 50k or even
50 miler if all goes well...the sad part
is, is that a large section of where this run
travels was devastated by wild fires this
past summer...they named it the
Powerhouse fire.
*
...so we went for a drive a couple of weeks
back to hike the PCT and to see where
the Powerhouse fire had burned. It burned
 just up the canyon from
where the OTH Mountain Bike Races were
being held...during the races it was awful seeing
the huge smoke plumes and knowing what beautiful terrain
 could be burning.
*
...I think that's why it took us almost 3 months
to gather the courage up for the drive up the canyon.
*
...to our initial surprise, so many things
we thought would have been burned, were spared.
*
*
The section of PCT we were hoping to hike didn't burn
but was closed...so we opted to hike an opposite section...
From there we could see beautiful Grass Mountain(untouched)
and the surrounding areas...the Leona Divide
Trail Run passes right through here in the early stages...
*
*
...and continues off into the distance where
the furthest range...
*

 *
...shows the fire's scaring.
This year's run, more than likely,
will be finding a new route...their website
will surely be giving updates.

* Happiness Delivered To The Doorstep *

I was so pleased to have these last 2 internet purchases
arrive on the doorstep as a success this time around!!
*
A beautiful pair of Brooks Trance 12 Running Shoes
and a gray Nathan Vapor Shape Running Vest!!
*
NO FICKLE FEET HERE!
*

*
These shoes fit like a dream!!!
Super plush comfort, with a little spring effect
in the heel...maybe it's my imagination, but it's
springy!!
*
...and I did end up stopping in to the local sporting goods
store to try them on before placing the order...to
make sure they didn't have to go back like the last
pair I wrote about a few blog entries back.
*
I felt really bad and a bit guilty talking to the
salesman while trying on shoes I knew I wasn't
going to buy...but it had to be done in order
to fix my impulse purchase mistake...
I couldn't make the same mistake twice.
*
And looking around, I know the majority of people
must be purchasing their merchandise, like me,
over the internet...the stores are just too
quiet and empty of customers every time I visit.
*
With the running vest, it had to be purchased online.
Regular hydration packs are always available, but
a specialized vest, like the Nathan Vapor Shape,
is nowhere to be found except online.
*
...and I was so excited to find the gray version
of this model...I almost by-passed this purchase
completely, because I thought it was only
available in the bright white. But with a little
research the gray version can be found.
*
Like the shoes, this vest fits like a dream
as well! It's only been taken for a few laps
around the living room...empty of any contents
and with all tags still attached...but I know,
just by the taylored fit, there will be
virtually no movement or problems with this vest.
*
I will give an update of it's true trail
performance post initiation run...!!

* A.M. Workout *

What better way to start the day...? An early
morning workout...running, riding, hiking or
whatever...with the wonderful opportunity to spread the
joyful sound of saying "Good Morning!" to
every passer by...
*
...the words ringing out like
 a door-bell chime, "Gooood Morning!!"...beckoning to the
most tired, grumpy, and depending on where your workout route
takes you, pompous of individuals, who, surprisingly,
will answer it in return, and with a smile!
In my neck of the woods, that in itself
is a rare and almost unheard of
human to human communicational exchange...
and, amazingly, it seems to work more often
than not...!
*
Along with it's ability to spread happiness
and good cheer, the early a.m. workout
will boost energy levels and offer a higher
sense of mental clarity throughout the day.
*
What better time to grab the vacuume cleaner
or lawn mower than after a weekend's
long training run...
*
...more to come soon.

"The St. George Marathon is Tomorrow! - Oct. 5, 2013... "A Treat From The Races....." (Republished)

* The St. George Marathon *
St. George, Utah

The St. George Marathon is tomorrow, Oct. 5, 2013.

It's hard to believe over 7,000 runners will be
huddling, once again, around the classic
pre-dawn bon-fires in just a matter of hours...
*
A wonderfully run race, a beautiful state and
a special city...good luck to all the participants.
******

This is a race every marathon runner should
treat themselves to.
~
Run in the fall, the first weekend in October,
this will be one of the most beautiful 26.2 miles
you will ever run.
~
The race begins in darkness, just before dawn,
in the community of Central, Utah.
The course winds it's way down through the beautiful
high desert of Utah, where miles of pinyon pines
and rambling horse ranches lead to the spectacular
descent into the red rocks
of
Snow Canyon.

*
...the race continues for many more scenic miles...
*
 *
...ultimately finishing to cheering crowds
in the old-town downtown of St. George.

Like most runners who have run The St. George Marathon,
you can't just run it one time......
you end up coming back....time, and time again.....

*

*
......Most years.....................................
the skies are blue..........but, on a rare occassion
.............................it can be cold and rainy!
~
Rain or shine, the experience will be something special....
something you will never forget........
~
........and as the saying goes, "you will be back.....
again, and again,
and again!!"

Finisher Medals are made from the beautiful
native Rhyolite stone found along the Utah/Nevada Border.

Happy Running!!

"Running Shoes Online...So Convenient!...(?)"

My favorite running shoes have finally reached
the point of being put out to pasture...
they're a couple of years old and long gone
at the local sporting goods store...
 ~
It was exciting to find, online, the possibility that
the shoe may be lingering somewhere in the corner
of a dark warehouse...I love these shoes and
always hoped they would be kept in production
exactly as they were.
~
After a little research, I was heartbroken to find
only a few specimens of the women's version even existed...
and of course, as luck would have it,
none in my size....
~
So I took the chance and ordered a pair of the
"men's" version...it appeared to be the same shoe and
the size available was the correct conversion...
So I joined the special club and got
a discount and even got free shipping!...super speedy
shipping...on the doorstep in a day!
~
I opened the box and instantly knew
my size conversions were all wrong...
the shoes
were going back.
~
Long story short...after reading the fine print
on the included invoice: return shipping isn't free...
it ends up canceling out the discount I
got for joining the club...which wasn't free either!
...my return will be good for
an exchange or store credit only...
and to top it off, I get to go stand in line
at the post office to ship my impulse
purchase back!
~
I'm sure it will all end up working out just fine...
Re-browsing through their website, I did see
a really nice high-end shoe I might be interested in
making an exchange for...
~
Maybe on my way down to the post office
I can stop by the local sporting goods store
to try them on first to make sure
they fit!!
...hmmmmm...

 * Riding The Weekend Out To A Close *

...Mt. Pacifico from Mill Creek Ranger Station...

 *
*
Started the ride with a strange helicopter hovering
above the  Mill Creek Summit Ranger Station....we watched the multiple transports of water to worksites
in distant canyons of The Angeles National Forest.
*
*
...a pleasant ride to the saddle...it was nice to see that
some small cedar trees and oaks were spared by
the devastating Station Fire a few years back.
We've avoided this ride for sometime hearing the
horror stories of Poodle Dog Plant
over-growth and complete road wash-outs...
(none of which ended up being true...the fireroad
was exactly as it was 4 years ago
and the Poodle Dog Plant was at a long arm's length.)
*

*
...on top of Mt. Pacifico, a nice view of
the desert floor was enjoyed with the sierras
in the distant background...a small grouping of
trees remain on the very furthest edge on
top...just enough vibrancy to attract a few birds
and to allow the wind to flow through the pine needles...
that wonderful sound of the wind in the pines.
*
A 12 mile ride...6 miles up and 6 miles down.

delicious to that next outing...

"P90X and Some Cardiovascular Stuff........"

* The Daily Workout *

 *
Staying focused and motivated is easier said than done.
~
Writing down a "Daily Workout Accomplishment Entry"
helps to keep that commitment moving forward
in the right direction...
~
...and with a trail run planned in the not too distant
future, I've decided to post my "Accomplishments"
to stay on track and keep from losing sight of my goals.
~

Entry #1 *

 *
I haven't done this particular P90X workout for
sometime now...it's the perfect workout for
keeping the arms toned and in shape...my muscles
will be sore tomorrow.
~
...time to get ready for Mountain Biking.

"A Sunday Hike In The Mountains....."

* Mt. Waterman *

...fall is in the air...

*
Hiked to the top of Mt. Waterman yesterday,
and the feeling of fall was definately in the air.
It was how the wind blew this time...and how
the shadows stretched out longer like they do
when the sun sits low in the sky....
~
...and even though the stream beds have been dry
for sometime now, there was a noticeable
presence of birds...hopefully the sign of an early
and abundantly wet winter.
~
This hike has always reminded me of "The Perfect Run"...
*
*
...a re-occurring dream involving a trail run
that finishes beneath the pines by a beautiful
mountain lodge with the sound of bluegrass music
echoing through the trees for miles...such a unique
dream, it had to be sketched out on paper in order
to bring the location to life...though Mt. Waterman Trail
is similar in some ways, the "true" trail
and location will present itself one day when I least
expect it.
~
Back to the hike: some nice views and a few big pieces
of teriyaki beef jerkey were enjoyed before returning...
 *
*
...back to the trailhead to complete the hike....a beautiful
day spent outdoors enjoying clear air, blue skies
and puffy white clouds.
*
*
*Back At Home*
...the evening sunsets are never a disappointment
this time of year and are always a nice way to end the day,
and the final weekend of summer.

"Hey, Where Did All The Muscle Go....?"

* The Muscle Mending Meal *

...because we need meat on our bones!

*
At some point, we all will notice how
gravity and time begin not being so kind.....
~
For runners, the bicep muscle in our arms seems
to be the first indicator and is the area
most affected by this.
~
It all begins with that little bit of loose skin
hanging above where the arm bends...without any
forewarning, what used to be smooth skin and defined
muscle has transformed itself into
something that resembles a deflated party ballon...
~
It's part of the aging process and part of what
can happen when proper calories are not consumed
correctly after putting in long training miles.
~
It is important to eat a meal, primarily of protien,
a 1/2 hour to 1 hour, post workout. This allows
for muscles to repair and replenish themeselves before
any "wasting" can occur.
~
A favorite "Replenishing Plate" of mine:
*

*
"The Muscle Mending Meal"

2 unsalted sardine fillets (packed in water)
1 cup cooked Farro
1 sliced hard-boiled egg
1/4 sliced avocado
1 cup fresh baby spinach leaves
Garden fresh tomato wedges
Sprinkling of Feta Cheese
Drizzling of Champagne Vinaigrette Dressing
A grinding of pepper to taste...
~
mmm, mmm, good!!
*
Though not an attractive plate to photograph,
"The Muscle Mending Meal" is tasty and good for you, too!!
~
Along with a regular weight lifting routine,
"The Muscle Mending Meal" should help build back biceps
and banish those muscle-loss woes!!

"Fickle Feet....Rejoice!!"

 A Great Shoe Makes For

HAPPY FEET!

... pamper those precious pups!

*
You only have one set of feet to carry you all
those miles....make sure to take good care of them and
buy the right pair of shoes!
~
Avoid blisters, bunions, black nails and hammer-toes
by choosing a great shoe the first time around!
*
*
My favorite trail shoe: La Sportiva's "Wildcat".
~
An all-around great trail running shoe, the Frixion
sole with Impact Brake System and Trail Bite Heal, offer
excellent stability and comfort on the most rocky of terrain.
Paired with a nice wool running sock, you'll be
sold on them too! (...I'm ready for a third pair!)
*
