" 'Trail Runners Roulette'...The Dicey Game Of Running Solo..."

* "Growing Up, I Used To Run Alone In Remote Places..." *

*
...on the fireroads and horse trails by my house...
never giving it a second thought that I might
be taking some risks and gambling with my safety.
*
They were much simpler times, before personal
cell phones, when a hand scribbled note was
what we left on the dining room table stating
our where-abouts.
*
Still, I was young and stupid and I thought
I was invincible...looking back, I was just really
lucky and somehow never crossed paths with any-
thing evil.
*
You would think the time that I found the deer
leg poking out of the dirt on
Earl Canyon Fireroad would've registered that
a mountain lion could be lurking near by and
possibly attack...
*
...or the time while running in the dusk,
down the same fireroad, narrowly missing multiple
rattlesnakes camouflaged by the deep sand...
*
What would I have done if luck were not on
my side? I was so far up the mountain, noone
would've heard my calls for help.
*
It was passing the grungy hobo man, while hiking,
that ended up being my true wake-up call...this
happening just a few years ago, well after seeing
the light, and swearing never to run alone in
remote places...
*
...as we passed each other on the trail, I was
instantly sickened by the dead silence that
hung over my usually well traveled training loop.
How was I suddenly all alone...where did everyone
go...
(?)
*
My heart racing, lodged in my throat like a
huge grapefruit...my ears ringing...my head
spinning...my mouth was dry, I couldn't swallow...
instantly, I felt 20 feet tall...Fight of Flight
had taken over.
*
I held no eye contact and safely hiked past the
scary man...firmly holding my hiking poles ready
for battle, if need be.
*
Breaking into a run the moment I was out of view,
I could not get down the mountain fast enough...
*
...My lesson was learned! From that day forward,
I stack the deck in my favor...I no longer
gamble with fate, but play by a very simple and
smart rule...

"A Thank You Note To My Friend, 'Turmeric'..."

THANK-YOU *

Dear Turmeric,

Just a little note of "thanks" for always being there
and for bringing a touch of "good-health" and happiness
to my every day.

Whether you're transformed into a cup of tea, added to
spice up a recipe or taken in simple supplement form,

your presense in my daily diet, over the past few years,
has kept me healthy and free of any knee discomfort.

I am happy to inform you that my usual upper respiratory
infections of winter have been non-existant and, instead,
replaced by the "simple head cold". Also, the knee dis-
comfort I might relieve with an ibuprofen after a long
ride or run, seems to have become a thing of the past.

Thank you, so much, Turmeric...for sharing with and en-
lightening me with all of your wonderful anti-microbial
and anti-inflammatory properties and for making my every
day a better day! I look forward to working with you in
the kitchen and out on the roads and trails for many more
years to come.

Sincerely, The "Stew Chef"

"Will P-90X Cooperate As A Cross-Training Workout....??"

...BREAKING 4 HOURS IN THE MARATHON...

...a week ago today, I completed my 1st P90-X
workout, the "Plyometrics" DVD...
*
Ouch!!...I couldn't run, I could barely walk...
it hurt to even touch my legs...
*
...a gentle mountain bike ride over the
weekend finally helped alleviate the pain
and loosen my legs back to normal...
*
I'm beginning to believe the movements and
the workouts are just too extreme for what is needed
to build effective running muscles...
*
For many years I have had visions of getting in
the best of shape using my P90-X DVD's in tandem
with my running and mountain biking training routine...
Add a workout in here and there to build muscle
strength and fitness, yet everytime I am
set back several days to recover from the
intense fatigue and soreness.
*
...it would be nice to get serious, and break
the 4 hour marathon time...2 years ago, coming somewhat close
by running a 4:12, and with very limited training
under the belt, it seems possible...
...running only 3 days a week, with the longest
training run for distance, around 18 miles, I was
surprised to take 19 minutes off my previous time.
*
...it came so easily, I often wonder what could
be possible with a more structured training
regimen...(?)
*
...discipline and follow-through will be key.

"Through The Neighborhoods I Go....4 Miles"

...the new shoes went out for their first
run today. A small 4 mile, slightly hilly,
horseshoe loop that always comes in handy...
...I do like my new shoes, even if they look
like something a football referee might wear...
they're comfortable, and that's what matters most...
and for $29.99,(Brooks Glycerins went for around
$130.00.), they will be wonderful back-up
trainers!!!
*

 *
...I've done this run numerous times,
just never on Thursday morning...
...I will need to remember Thursday is trash day...
...not the most pleasant of days to
be expanding the nostrils on the hill climbs.
*
 *
...and today was a little hazy...
*
 *
...but with all the trees beginning
to show their new leaves and blossoms...
...and looking out over the beautiful
valley view...
*
 *
...a simple neighborhood run turned into quite an
enjoyable experience...even the cloud
displays were spectacular...
*
 *
...to my surprise and astonishment, a small cluster of
California Poppies had taken refuge and were vibrantly
thriving within a garden bed...
*
*
...sadly, it was the only poppy plant to be seen.
...the parched and barren hillsides are
usually solid green this time of year...
...alive with the color of lupine
and poppy plants for as far as the eye can see...
...but here we are, once again, approaching
another brown and crispy spring that's sure to lead
into the blast furnaces of summer.
*
*
...how nice...a beautiful Tiger Swallow Tail Butterfly
greeted me as I came down my walkway...
...the perfect ending to a really nice run.
*

...change someone's day...Smile, and say "Hello"!

"Hints Of Spring Awaken The Running Bug..."

...and to find a pair of Brooks "Glycerin"
running shoes looking up at me from the
men's shoe rack at Ross...and for only $29.99!!...
...who would've thought(?)...online running stores
declared this shoe "extinct" a year ago...so what
was it doing here on the shelves of Ross??
If it wasn't a sign to start running,
it was a jolt of inspiration
to at least sit down and try to remember how
to compose a blog entry...
*
...although they are the men's version,
they are my size, they fit perfectly and
are the original "Glycerin" shoe before all
the design changes...my last pair
were the best running shoes I have ever owned...
"Running on Clouds" could best describe
how the shoes made my feet feel.
*
 *
...so then it was over to Walmart, because
it is around this time when the spring running
items arrive...and the Danskin line of Skorts
are out on display...I have found they fit
the best of all so far...so another "3" skorts
were added...
*
*
...to an already over-stuffed
running dresser.
*
...it's time to train, once again...
